2020 Mazda CX-5 vs 2020 Hyundai Tucson

No other segment on the Canadian new car market is busier. In fact, there are more options in this category than any other but there’s only one Mazda CX-5. To be clear, the CX-5 is unique among its peers as it blurs the lines between a typical compact SUV and a premium vehicle.

One of its worthy competitors is the 2020 Hyundai Tucson. The Tucson has long been a value leader in the segment however this lower price point comes at a cost. Its starting price, set at $25,999, may seem advantageous compared to the CX-5’s $27,950 however consider the worth of the Mazda’s added features.

The CX-5 includes, for the price, 17-inch alloy wheels versus heavier steel wheels, a more powerful Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine which also happens to be more fuel-efficient, and we’re only just beginning.

From the very start, the Mazda CX-5 exudes a premium aura. This is immediately noticeable simply by looking at it. The CX-5’s design is alive, refined and unique. The same caries forth within the vehicle’s cabin. All material and attention to detail are on par with SUVs costing far more money. Space-wise, both the Tucson and the CX-5 provide generous space for occupants and capacious trunk. Standard infotainment features include a 7-inch display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for each SUV.

Given that these SUVs are meant to be everything in a family’s life, Mazda offers more engine options for the CX-5 than any other compact SUV. For the performance-oriented driver, the turbocharged 250-horsepower Skyactiv-G 2.5 T engine is an enticing option. With the Hyundai Tucson, the optional mill is a naturally aspirated 2.4-litre 4-cylinder which is not only less powerful than the Mazda’s base 2.5-litre mill but, when both are mated to the available AWD systems, consumes considerably more fuel. Finally, the 2020 Mazda CX-5 can optionally feature a torque-rich extremely frugal Skyactiv-D diesel engine.

Truly, the 2020 Mazda CX-5 has no equal in the segment no matter how it is compared. Its premium approach captivates attention and once the CX-5 is driven, nothing else compares.

Comparing the 2026 Mazda CX-90 MHEV GT and Signature Trims: Is the Upgrade Worth It for Burnaby Families?

The 2026 Mazda CX-90 MHEV lineup spans five trim levels, and for buyers who have already narrowed the search to Mazda's flagship three-row crossover, the decision most commonly comes down to two: the GT and the Signature.
