2021.5 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2022 Kia Sportage: The CX-5 Offer a Better Package

The Mazda CX-5 has always been the favourite vehicle of families seeking a great compact crossover. A few midyear enhancements were recently brought to this superb Mazda and it is now better than ever. Upgraded interior equipment and more overall standard features add a few touches that make this SUV even better than it already was.

Here, we compare the latest 2021.5 Mazda CX-5 to the 2022 Kia Sportage.

The 2021.5 Mazda CX-5 has a better choice of engines

The CX-5 lineup starts with a powerful and efficient 2.5-litre four-cylinder that generates 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. All Sportage models (except one) have a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that reaches 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque, limiting capabilities and performance.

For maximum performance the CX-5 brings a powerful turbocharged engine to the table. It is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that outputs up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. It is standard in the Signature trim and available as an option in the GT. The Kia Sportage also includes a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit, but it unfortunately peaks at 237 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.

The CX-5 also offers better driving dynamics for drivers looking for a more precise ride.  It features standard G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus), but also available i-Activ AWD, which is the best all-wheel drive system in the industry. The Sportage simply cannot compete with the CX-5’s advanced engineering.

The 2021.5 Mazda CX-5 features more safety and intuitive technologies

The 2021.5 CX-5 features a 10.25-inch display screen that includes updated Mazda Connect software with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. All Sportage models only have an 8-inch screen which gives access to a much less intuitive system.

Inside the CX-5, drivers now have the full i-Activsense safety package included as standard equipment on every trim. It includes Smart City Brake Support Front, Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Smart Brake Support Front, Pedestrian Detection, Lane-keep Assist System, Lane Departure Warning System, and more.

The 2021.5 Mazda CX-5 is a more refined SUV that features more equipment, better performance and more advanced driving dynamics compared to the Kia Sportage. Come and see it today! Comparing the 2026 Mazda CX-90 MHEV GT and Signature Trims: Is the Upgrade Worth It for Burnaby Families?

The 2026 Mazda CX-90 MHEV lineup spans five trim levels, and for buyers who have already narrowed the search to Mazda's flagship three-row crossover, the decision most commonly comes down to two: the GT and the Signature.
