2021.5 Mazda CX-9 vs. 2021 Toyota Highlander: Choose Refinement and Dynamics

The CX-9 is now a favourite around Canada, and the improved 2021 models made it even better. However, Mazda couldn't wait until next year to further improve this popular SUV. The updated 2021.5 lineup is turning even more heads with upgraded equipment and more standard features.

Because the CX-9 is such an outstanding vehicle, we challenge competitors to line their models up against it. Here, we compare the latest CX-9 to the 2021 Toyota Highlander.

The 2021.5 Mazda CX-9 has the perfect engine

The CX-9 includes turbocharged power as standard in all trim levels. The Skyactiv-G 2.5 T 4-cylinder with Dynamic Pressure Turbo creates up to 250 horsepower and an impressive 320 lb-ft of torque. The Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission features manual-shift mode and Drive Selection switch. Most models also include standard paddle shifters so you can have more input over each journey.

The gas Highlander offers a different type of engine. The 295-horsepower V6 may seem to be a challenge, but torque drops to nearly 260 lb-ft. The CX-9's better response helps in traffic, towing, or when you need instant power. Plus, most Highlander models are heavier than the CX-5 and consume the extra horsepower.  The more expensive Highlander Hybrid, outputs a net 243 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. You just won't have the performance and torque of the turbocharged CX-9.

A Sportier Driving Experience in the 2021.5 CX-9

Beyond the numbers, the CX-9 delivers a much more refined driving experience than the Highlander. While the Highlander uses basic styling, budget oriented textures inside and limited comfort, the CX-9 is known to provide a driver and passenger experience that rivals luxury brands. It also features more advanced systems like the more intuitive infotainment system with Mazda Connected services, which lets drivers connect to their CX-9 remotely.

And if you like hugging the curves, the CX-9’s i-Activ AWD system is much more advanced than the Highlander’s AWD system, letting drivers conquer the road at high speed in the summer with confidence, but also tackle the worst road conditions in the winter as well.

How the 2026 Mazda CX-5's Larger Cargo Area Handles Weekend Errands and Getaways from Burnaby

The all-new 2026 Mazda CX-5 is a full third-generation redesign, and one of the most practical changes is how much more cargo space it now offers. The previous model was a strong seller in British Columbia — over 300,000 CX-5s have been sold across Canada since 2012 — but tight rear cargo dimensions were a consistent point of feedback from owners. Mazda addressed that directly with the 2026...
