2021 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2021 Honda CR-V: More Style, Performance, and Luxury

The Mazda CX-5 is making its presence known everywhere it goes. With a modern look, exciting powertrains, a luxury-minded interior, and advanced technology, it strikes a chord with many SUV enthusiasts. Aside from being a great crossover for family and friends, the CX-5 is also sophisticated enough for urban adventures and driving colleagues.

Although the CX-5's segment is full of competition, it truly stands out. Here, we compare it to the 2021 Honda CR-V.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is a better friend on the road

The CX-5 separates itself with the capabilities of its powertrains. The GX, GS, Kuro and GT models feature a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that generates 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. In comparison, the CR-V's sole powertrain is a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces a few more horses, but 8 lb-ft of torque less.

However, the CX-5 has an appetite for more excitement. The Signature, 100th Anniversary and GT (optional) feature a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder that generates up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. Combined with i-Activ AWD, this is plenty of capability you can use virtually anywhere in Canada.

All CX-5 models pair with a six-speed automatic transmission that allows you to personalize your driving experience. Models with the turbocharged engine also include paddle shifters. The Honda CR-V's continuously variable transmission is much less dynamic on the road.

Overall, the CX-5 offers more drivetrain capabilities and fun.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 offers more of your favourite amenities

On the outside, the CX-5 offers standard LED headlights on all models. It is also much more stylish than the CR-V in many ways. Inside, the CX-5 uses materials and textures that you will find in luxury SUVs, whereas the CR-V opts for budget-oriented materials.

Inside, the CX-5 has a larger standard touchscreen display than its competitor, and you can access a Bose premium sound system in the Mazda. You can sink into Nappa leather or Garnett red leather-trimmed upholstery in several CX-5 models, whereas you have to settle for basic perforated leather in a few CR-V trims that have it.

Comparing the 2026 Mazda CX-90 MHEV GT and Signature Trims: Is the Upgrade Worth It for Burnaby Families?

The 2026 Mazda CX-90 MHEV lineup spans five trim levels, and for buyers who have already narrowed the search to Mazda's flagship three-row crossover, the decision most commonly comes down to two: the GT and the Signature.
