2021 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2021 Nissan Rogue: A Much More Enjoyable Drive

Even if your SUV is a multitasking vehicle that takes care of your family’s needs on a daily basis, it should also provide enjoyment every time you drive it. And the Mazda CX-5 is one of the very few members of its segment that offers reliability, comfort and technologies all in a stylish package that doesn’t compromise on driving dynamics.

Here, we compare the 2021 Mazda CX-5 to the 2021 Nissan Rogue, a recently redesigned rival that still compromises too much on the basics of driving pleasure.

Choose performance with the 2021 Mazda CX-5

Performance is one of the pillars of outstanding driving dynamics. And the Mazda CX-5 delivers with a choice of two engines that provide segment-leading power and torque. Four CX-5 trims use a precisely engineered Skyactiv-G 2.5 L four-cylinder unit that boasts 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

For even more power and torque, you can opt for Mazda’s Skyactiv-G 2.5 Dynamic Pressure Turbo engine that can provide up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. This powerful unit is standard on the Signature and 100th Anniversary grades and optional with the GT. This engine also comes with the quick-shifting 6-speed automatic gearbox with manual-shift mode and Drive Selection switch and paddle shifters for a personalized drive.

The Nissan Rogue, on the other hand, uses a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine as its only powertrain choice. This unit only provides 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque – which positions it below all CX-5 trims in terms of performance and drivability. Moreover, this engine is paired with a slower, less reactive continuously variable transmission.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has the best interior of the comparison

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is known for its refined driving abilities. But this refinement is also present inside the cabin, with textures, materials and technologies that go beyond what the rivals offer in the segment.

For example, the available Centerpoint 2 Surround Technology and AudioPilot 2 Noise Compensation technology include 7 channels of customized equalization and SurroundStage Signal Processing. It also has more rear legroom than the Rogue, providing more comfort to your passengers on long drives.

How the 2026 Mazda CX-5's Larger Cargo Area Handles Weekend Errands and Getaways from Burnaby

The all-new 2026 Mazda CX-5 is a full third-generation redesign, and one of the most practical changes is how much more cargo space it now offers. The previous model was a strong seller in British Columbia — over 300,000 CX-5s have been sold across Canada since 2012 — but tight rear cargo dimensions were a consistent point of feedback from owners. Mazda addressed that directly with the 2026...
