2021 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan: More Power, Refinement and Capability

Every Mazda is built to provide a rewarding driving experience. And the automaker’s SUV lineup greatly benefits from this philosophy by bringing characteristics that most rivals fail to deliver, like sophisticated styling, upscale performance, remarkable safety, and advanced technology. The CX-5 offers a complete package in a compact crossover that delivers comfort and space, but does it with such style that even German rivals in the segment can’t catch compete.

Here, we compare the 2021 Mazda CX-5 to the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is more efficient and powerful

Under the hood, the CX-5 offers a choice of two powertrains that combine efficiency and performance. Four grades feature a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. This engine makes more horsepower than the Tiguan’s sole engine choice, and is mated to a performance-oriented 6-speed automatic transmission.

But since efficiency is also important, the CX5’s base engine fares better than the Tiguan. For example, FWD CX-5s use 9.7 L/100 km on the highway and 7.8 L/100 km in the city, which is much less than the FWD Tiguan with its 10.5 L/100 km city and 8.1 L/100 km highway.

For drivers at heart, the CX-5 includes a turbocharged engine that delivers segment-leading performances. Buyers who choose the turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder can take advantage of up to 250 horsepower and a 320 lb-ft of torque.

Moreover, the Mazda CX-5 is there for you if you need to tow, with better towing capacity of 2,000 pounds compared to the Tiguan’s 1,500.

Needless to say, the CX-5 is mechanically more advanced than the Tiguan.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 takes refinement to new levels

The CX-5 provides precise handling and driving dynamics, the type that you will find in a finely tuned sports car, thanks to standard G-Vectoring Plus system and the available i-Activ AWD system, which is much more advanced than what the Tiguan does with the 4MOTION system.

But the CX-5 also immerses its occupants in an upscale environment with more refined textures and materials that combine to create a more luxurious setting compared to the Tiguan’s interior, which uses a lot of hard plastics.

Comparing the 2026 Mazda CX-90 MHEV GT and Signature Trims: Is the Upgrade Worth It for Burnaby Families?

The 2026 Mazda CX-90 MHEV lineup spans five trim levels, and for buyers who have already narrowed the search to Mazda's flagship three-row crossover, the decision most commonly comes down to two: the GT and the Signature.
