2021 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2022 Hyundai Tucson: Better Style, Performance, and Safety

Mazda's move to the forefront of crossover styling, performance, safety and technology in this segment is creating a lot of buzz among prospective buyers and owners. The CX-5 is now one of the most recognizable crossovers on the road. Two high-quality powertrains deliver a range of options that fit your driving lifestyle.

To illustrate several of these points, we compare the CX-5 to the 2022 Hyundai Tucson.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 bumps up the power

Each CX-5 is gifted with a solid engine. Available in four models, a 2.5-litre four-cylinder generates 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. It's a perfect balance to get around traffic or spend a weekend in the mountains. The Hyundai Tucson offers a similar powertrain in four out of its five trims. Although it has the same amount of horsepower, it has less torque, which could mean a difference in accelerations and overall driving dynamics.

Both vehicles also offer higher-level powertrains. The CX-5 brings forward a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder that outputs up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. When you need a response that driving enthusiasts stand by, the CX-5 turbo is the way to go. The Tucson offers a hybrid models, but its max torque measures out at 258 lb-ft. The CX-5 will enhance your drive every time.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is a safety leader

The CX-5 aims straight for safety in all aspects of its design, from the basic structure to driver assistance systems. For this, the CX-5 has earned an IIHS 2021 Top Safety Pick+ designation. It's a rare and well-earned award. The most recent safety rating for the Tucson does not include a Top Safety Pick+, and the 2022 has not yet been tested.

The CX-5 received highest marks in crashworthiness, roof strength, crash prevention, pedestrian crash prevention when using Smart Brake Support with Collision Warning and Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection, and more.

You can have a peace of mind that the CX-5 is tested and proven to be one of the safest crossovers on the road.
