Comparative Analysis of the 2024 Mazda CX-90 and the 2024 Subaru Ascent

One of the fastest growing SUV segments in the industry is the midsize three-row segment. All mainstream automakers offer at least one and one of the latest newcomers is the striking 2024 Mazda CX-90.

In the following story, we will compare it to the 2024 Subaru Ascent, two prominent SUVs in the market. This article aims to provide a clear comparison between these models, focusing on powertrain options, luxury features, and styling.

Powertrain Options

The Mazda CX-90 introduces a new era of powertrains with its three electrified options. The lineup includes the standard e-Skyactiv G 3.3L Turbo engine producing 280 hp, the high-output version of the same engine ramping up to 340 hp, and the e-Skyactiv PHEV combining an electric motor with a 2.5L engine for a total output of 323 hp. Each of these engines is paired with Mazda's new eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, designed specifically for these electrified powertrains. The CX-90 not only delivers power but also achieves impressive NRCan-estimated fuel economy, particularly in its high-output turbo variant.

On the other hand, the Subaru Ascent is powered by a 260-hp 2.4L turbocharged BOXER engine, coupled with Subaru's high-torque Lineartronic CVT featuring an 8-speed manual mode and paddle shifters. There are no electrified powertrain options however Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and X-MODE with Hill Descent Control are standard.

Luxury Features and Equipment

In terms of luxury and equipment, the Mazda CX-90 offers a range of up to ten configurations. The higher trims boast features like Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated seats, a 12.3-inch TFT LCD instrument panel, an available 12.3-inch touchscreen display, and a Bose 12-speaker audio system. Safety is paramount in the CX-90, with the inclusion of the i-Activsense suite and a 360° View Monitor. The Signature trim of the CX-90 takes luxury a notch higher with its Driver Personalization System and an internal camera for driver recognition.

The Subaru Ascent include an 11.6-inch infotainment display, a premium audio system, and leather-trimmed upholstery in the higher trims. It also includes the latest version of the EyeSight Driver Assist Technology and a Surround View Monitor.

Where materials and craftsmanship are concerned, the Mazda CX-90 simply eclipses the Subaru Ascent.

Styling

Styling is a significant factor in distinguishing these two SUVs. The Mazda CX-90 showcases a sophisticated and contemporary design, highlighted by options like 21-inch alloy wheels and a distinctive front grille. The interior is a blend of luxury, capability, and elegance, featuring materials like Nappa leather, suede-like fabric, and wood accents. The Signature trim adds an exclusive touch with a two-tone leather-wrapped steering wheel and curly maple wood trim.

The Subaru Ascent adopts a subtler look that isn’t quite as premium. The cabin focuses on practicality in mind.

While both the Mazda CX-90 and Subaru Ascent offer compelling features in their 2024 models, the CX-90 wins easily with its range of electrified powertrains, luxury features, and elegant styling.

How the 2026 Mazda CX-5's Larger Cargo Area Handles Weekend Errands and Getaways from Burnaby

The all-new 2026 Mazda CX-5 is a full third-generation redesign, and one of the most practical changes is how much more cargo space it now offers. The previous model was a strong seller in British Columbia — over 300,000 CX-5s have been sold across Canada since 2012 — but tight rear cargo dimensions were a consistent point of feedback from owners. Mazda addressed that directly with the 2026...
