Mazda confirms upcoming CX-70 and CX-90 PHEV models

Mazda provided a long list of updates to its electrification strategy in November by confirming new plug-in hybrid sport utility vehicles that will launch next year and giving us more information about upcoming electric and hybrid Mazda models as well. It will all start in 2023 with the introduction of the 2024 Mazda CX-70 Mazda CX-90 supervenes which will both feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

New Mazda CX-70 PHEV, CX-90 PHEV, and CX-50 Hybrid models coming in 2023

Three new electrified Mazda models will launch in 2023. These will include the CX-70 and CX-90 plug-in hybrid SUVs and a new hybrid version Mazda CX-50. We don't know the exact specifications of this new plug-in hybrid powertrain or hybrid engine, but in Europe the Mazda CX-60 PHEV offers 50 km of range. We expect the CX-70 and CX-90 PHEV models offer about the same.

Mazda also confirmed that it will offer a new hybrid powertrain in its popular and brand-new CX-50 SUV. The CX-50 will provide the same performance as the current model and its turbocharged engine, but with significantly improved fuel economy.

A new fully electric SUV coming by 2025

Mazda confirmed there will be a new fully electric SUV joining its lineup in the next two years. This new SUV will be built on the new SKYACTIV EV platform which promises to deliver the same impressive handling and sportiness of current Mazda vehicles combined with impressive range and efficiency. Mazda also confirmed that the new Mazda MX-30 would go on sale across Canada in 2023. Last but not least, Mazda announced new hybrid models coming as well as mild hybrid powertrains which will feature a 48 V battery to enhance efficiency and fuel economy.

"We are very excited to be sharing more details about our electrified future in Canada, focused on the right vehicles in the right segments that our customers are asking for," said David Klan, President and CEO, Mazda Canada. "The CX-90 and CX-70 PHEV models coming next year will bring a level of performance above anything we've ever offered in Canada, along with electrified efficiency, and the craftsmanship our customers expect from Mazda."

Mazda plans to offer a fully electrified lineup by 2030. This updated electrification strategy ensures that Mazda is on its way to becoming a true pioneer when it comes to electrification.

Comparing the 2026 Mazda CX-90 MHEV GT and Signature Trims: Is the Upgrade Worth It for Burnaby Families?

The 2026 Mazda CX-90 MHEV lineup spans five trim levels, and for buyers who have already narrowed the search to Mazda's flagship three-row crossover, the decision most commonly comes down to two: the GT and the Signature.
