Mazda CX-5 2021 vs Toyota RAV4 2021: Choosing a Compact SUV That Isn't Boring

The CX-5 sets the stage for compact SUV refinement and performance in its segment. With an unforgettable exterior and exhilarating torque, the CX-5 only begins to differentiate itself from the competition. Seven well-equipped models offer a range of choices that match with many tastes.

Here, we compare the 2021 CX-5 to the 2021 Toyota RAV4.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has more power

Four CX-5 models feature a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that produces 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. The RAV4's competing engine has comparable horsepower, but with less torque. However, the CX-5 takes the lead with a turbo 2.5-litre that boosts horsepower up to 250 and torque to 320 lb-ft. This powertrain is available on three models that expand the limits of compact SUV performance.

The CX-5 also features a six-speed automatic transmission that allows more driver control with manual shift mode and a drive selection switch. Turbocharged models also receive paddle shifters. The combination of this transmission and amenities enables a more personalized driving experience over the RAV4.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 features more advanced performance tech and comfort where needed

The advanced G-Vectoring Control adjusts power distribution and vehicle weight to minimize vehicle and driver stresses while cornering. It changes the distribution of engine torque to each wheel to counteract turning forces. This balances the vehicle when cornering and reduces fatigue. Add in turbo power, and you just may not want to stop driving the CX-5. The RAV4 doesn't have such a unique cornering system such as G-Vectoring Control.

The i-Activ All-Wheel Drive system also enhances the CX-5's performance in dry and wet conditions by properly distributing torque to wheels that grip while eliminating wheel spin. This also adds safety on snowy and slick roads, ensuring the best grip available year round.

The CX-5 features comfortable seating that includes more front headroom than the RAV4. You'll feel less confined with more space above you and around your head. Passengers also enjoy more rear legroom in the CX-5, allowing them to stretch out on longer trips.

Overall, the CX-5 has better power and torque, a more personalized driving experience, and more advanced handling and agility technology. Also, it is a much more stylish SUV, inside and out.

Comparing the 2026 Mazda CX-90 MHEV GT and Signature Trims: Is the Upgrade Worth It for Burnaby Families?
