Mazda CX-90 2024: Unveiling the Distinct Features of MHEV and PHEV Powertrains

The Mazda CX-90 is stepping into 2024 with two distinctly tuned powertrain options that are designed to meet the unique driving preferences of different consumers. While both powertrains deliver impressive performance, they leverage unique e-Skyactiv technology strategies that differentiate their approach to hybrid technology.

MHEV

At the core of the CX-90's offering is an all-new 3.3L Inline Six e-Skyactiv Turbo engine, serving as the most potent mass-production gasoline engine ever developed by Mazda. It dishes out up to an impressive 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque when using the recommended premium fuel. This robust engine is complemented by Mazda's M-Hybrid Boost, a mild-hybrid system strategically designed to blend efficiency with performance. The electric motor, positioned between the engine and transmission, ensures smooth acceleration from a standstill while also powering the CX-90 directly at low speeds. The resulting effect is a combination of upscale driving experience, engaging sound, and remarkable efficiency, a testament to Mazda's continuous pursuit of automotive refinement.

PHEV

In contrast, the new e-Skyactiv PHEV powertrain, tuned specifically for the North American market, emphasizes the versatility of hybrid technology. Boasting a remarkable 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque on the recommended premium fuel, this powertrain marries performance and efficiency. Its design allows for operation solely on the electric motor in diverse driving situations, thereby reducing dependence on the gasoline engine and enhancing fuel efficiency. This powertrain employs Mazda's reliable 2.5L four-cylinder engine, which works in synergy with the electric motor and a high-capacity 17.8 kWh battery. The setup guarantees versatility for longer drives or when maximum acceleration is needed. Furthermore, the battery offers an estimated 42km of all-electric motoring when fully charged, providing a realistic plug-in hybrid option for day-to-day commuting.

Regardless of the chosen powertrain, every CX-90 is paired with an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission, which has been specifically designed for electrified longitudinal powertrains and larger platform vehicles. This multi-speed automatic gearbox, devoid of a torque converter, ensures seamless and direct acceleration while simultaneously enhancing the overall drivetrain efficiency. With the CX-90, Mazda once again proves that performance and efficiency can harmoniously coexist in the automotive world, setting a strong precedent for future powertrain developments.
