Mazda Earns Eight IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ Awards in 2024

Mazda has once again established a benchmark for automotive safety, concluding 2024 with eight vehicles earning the prestigious TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This accomplishment positions Mazda as the leading safety brand, boasting more TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards than any other manufacturer this year.

Mazda Models Recognized for Excellence

The eight Mazda models that earned the 2024 TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards include the Mazda3, Mazda3 Sport, CX-30, CX-50, CX-70, CX-70 PHEV, CX-90, and CX-90 PHEV. Each of these vehicles not only met but exceeded the strict safety criteria established by the IIHS.

Notably, the CX-50 maintained its TOP SAFETY PICK+ status for the 2024 model year, following significant enhancements in pedestrian front crash prevention. Similarly, the CX-70 and its PHEV variant received praise for their advanced safety systems, solidifying Mazda's reputation for prioritizing the protection of drivers and passengers.

The Updated IIHS Standards

The IIHS raised the bar for its 2024 safety awards, implementing tougher testing protocols to emphasize passenger and pedestrian safety. To qualify for a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, vehicles must:

  1. Earn good ratings in the small overlap front crash test and the updated side impact crash test.
  2. Achieve an acceptable or good rating in the revised moderate overlap front crash test, which places greater focus on back seat safety.
  3. Demonstrate effective pedestrian front crash prevention with an acceptable or good rating in these evaluations.
  4. Feature acceptable- or good-rated headlights as standard across all trims.

Mazda's ability to secure eight awards under these more rigorous standards highlights the brand’s engineering and design expertise.

Leadership in Safety Innovation

IIHS President David Harkey commended Mazda for its proactive approach: “Mazda once again demonstrated its ability to adapt to our more stringent testing requirements, ensuring their vehicles meet the highest standards for occupant and pedestrian safety.”

Mazda Canada President and CEO David Klan echoed this sentiment: “Our engineering teams are dedicated to advancing vehicle safety in every model we produce. These eight awards reflect Mazda’s continued efforts to exceed safety expectations year after year.”

Safety as a Core Value

Mazda's success in the 2024 IIHS awards showcases the brand's focus on protecting everyone on the road, whether behind the wheel, a passenger, or a pedestrian. Mazda's award-winning lineup offers unmatched peace of mind for Canadian drivers seeking vehicles that prioritize safety without compromising performance or design.

How the 2026 Mazda CX-5's Larger Cargo Area Handles Weekend Errands and Getaways from Burnaby

The all-new 2026 Mazda CX-5 is a full third-generation redesign, and one of the most practical changes is how much more cargo space it now offers. The previous model was a strong seller in British Columbia — over 300,000 CX-5s have been sold across Canada since 2012 — but tight rear cargo dimensions were a consistent point of feedback from owners. Mazda addressed that directly with the 2026...
