Exploring the Innovative MHEV Powertrain Technology in the 2024 Mazda CX-90

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 ushers in a new era of technological sophistication, featuring an advanced mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) powertrain as a standard offering across all its trims. The automaker has strategically incorporated its e-Skyactiv technology into the CX-90's powertrain to enhance its performance and efficiency in unison.

The heart of the CX-90 lies in its newly developed 3.3L inline-six e-Skyactiv turbo engine, an engineering marvel that stands as Mazda's most powerful mass-production gasoline engine to date. In the base versions, this engine serves up a substantial 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. However, those seeking additional power will find the GT-P and higher trims more intriguing as they offer an increased output of 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque without affecting fuel efficiency. The GS, GS-L, and GT consume on average 8.4L/100km on the highway while the GT-P and Signature consume on average 8.5L/100km on the highway.

A key highlight of the CX-90's MHEV system, known as the M-Hybrid Boost, is its seamless integration of an electric motor into the conventional powertrain. The electric motor is carefully placed between the engine and transmission, resulting in smooth acceleration from standstill and the ability to power the vehicle directly at low speeds. This configuration is central to Mazda's mission of balancing exhilarating performance with uncompromised efficiency.

Complementing this advanced hybrid system is an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission, specifically engineered for electrified longitudinal powertrains and larger platform vehicles. Eschewing a torque converter, the multi-speed automatic gearbox achieves direct acceleration and enhances drivetrain efficiency.

Overall, the 2024 Mazda CX-90, equipped with its standard MHEV powertrain, is poised to provide a unique blend of engaging sound, smooth-driving experience, and superior efficiency. By offering a range of power outputs and blending the best of electric and gasoline propulsion, Mazda is pushing the boundaries of what can be expected from hybrid vehicles, setting a strong benchmark for the automotive industry.
